You know the maxim: The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work. Are you an avid angler a bit tired of being confined to local lakes and rivers? Imagine winter fishing. Cold days on a frozen lake or boating in blue, tropical waters. Hard decision to make? Not!!! Trade in your Chapstick and runny nose for suntan lotion, shorts and a flowered shirt, get your ticket to Costa Rica and enjoy fishing like you have never thought possible. Costa Rica fishing is exactly what the doctor orders for winter time blues.

Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Three minutes of fighting the little guy after two hours of sitting over the ice. Now, imagine catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the awesome marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!

A great place for a Costa Rica fishing vacation is its North Pacific coast. This area is called the “Gold Coast” because of its amenities and is easilyconveniently reached. There is a new international airport at Liberia, Costa Rica, just minutes from the North Pacific Coast and your adventure. You will find the fishing centers of Tamarindo and Flamingo with miles of great beaches and lots of Costa Rica attractions. If you are in search of sailfish, visit this coast between May and August for the best fishing, but these fish are here year-round. From August to October, you might find large schools of different tuna species with some weighing up to 400 pounds and many exceeding 60 pounds. Catch the shoreline-dwelling roosterfish here November to March not far from the Papagayo Resort. You also have a good chance of battling large marlin, wahoo, and brightly colored dorado fish.

If you are looking for billfish, the beautiful is where you should head. Between December to April, travel to Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina for a guided charter to angle in deep offshore waters for big marlin and sailfish. Sometimes, you will also find tuna and other fish as well. The colorful dorado fish can be caught from May through October. If you explore closer to shore, you can expect to find wahoo, roosters, snapper, and snook.

For many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found along the southern Pacific Coast near the incomparable Osa Peninsula down to Panama. In the months when the water is warm, big marlin and sailfish are frequent visitors. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is reported by many to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. There are lots of kinds of fish here, including large groupers, delectable sea bass, and the toothy barracuda. And, at times, you will have hundreds of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.

Costa Rica’s Caribbean waters contain the world famous fishing areas of Tortuguero National Park and Barra del Colorado close to the Nicaragua border. Although these waters are often very choppy, you can catch many types of deep sea fish on days when the water is flat. The prized tarpon gamefish are plentiful here from May to November and some reach about 150 pounds or more. They are caught off river mouths and also in rivers and estuaries that are filled with wildlife. This remote coast is one of the only places where you might catch a rare Atlantic sail. Big snook are also readily available. You may even hook a giant grouper, guapote, tripletail, or Jack Crevalle! And, try to time your visit when the Atlantic green sea turtles are nesting on the world’s largest reserve.
